After trying xbmc and media portal I'll try plex for a while. If you really wanted a more centralized media server system you'd need to look at Plex, the Plex server scans in content and the clients connect to the server automatically so everyone sees the same thing. Media Browser and its apps are completely free, so there’s no monthly fee or per-app purchases you’ll have to deal with — then again, Media Browser doesn’t even offer PlayStation or Xbox support you could purchase if you wanted to. So, you’ll need to pick one — or, better yet, consider trying both and figuring out which one works best for you. These apps often allow you to browse and access photos, too — perfect if you’re the type of person who keeps a local photo collection, too.

I would have thought a Windows DataCentre license would be seriously OTT for a SOHO install. There will be a load of services it loads up that you'll never use if all you need as a basic file server. Almost all Windows O/S's (including "desktop" ones) can do basic file sharing over a network - you don't particularly need a "server" license unless you want some of the other features the "servers" include. This can improve startup times on machines that are disconnected from the company network. New Group Policy settings have been added to cover new features in Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11, such as enabling/disabling SPDY/3 support, configuring start screen layouts, and detecting phone numbers in web pages.
